育英小学校発祥の地（西福寺）

所在地　台東区蔵前4-16-16　（西福寺）

　明治2年（1869）3月、明治新政府は幕府・藩による政治体制にかわる新しい日本の構築にあたって、国民全体の教育の推進をはかるため、小学校の設置を定め、明治3年（1870）3月、東京に6つの小学校を設立した。
　その1つが、本寺境内に設立された「仮小学　第4校」で、現在の育英小学校の前身である。開校日は明治3年（1870）6月23日で、現蔵前・鳥越・浅草橋・柳橋・三筋付近に居住していた旧大名・旗本及びその家臣の子弟たちが入学したといわれる。したがって、当地は、明治5年（1872）8月の学制発布に先だつ、東京で最も早い公立小学校発祥の地である。
　当校は、明治7年（1874）4月中旬に医学館跡地（現浅草橋4丁目17番付近）へ移転、明治10年（1877）8月、育英小学校と改称し、明治18年（1885）10月に現在地（浅草橋2丁目26番8号）に移った。

          BIRTHPLACE OF IKUEI PRIMARY SCHOOL
 In March of 1869 the Japanese government  started revolutionizing the Japanese education system. In the following March it opened 6 primary school in Tokyo. One of them was opened here in the precincts of Saifukuji temple and called the 4th school. This is the birthplace of one of the earliest public primary schools in Tokyo.
 The 4th school existed here until the middle of April in 1874. In August in 1877 it was renamed Ikuei primary school and in Octover 1885 this school was moved to the present siete (8-26,2-chome,Asakusabashi).
