蓬莱園跡（ほうらいえんあと）

所在地　台東区浅草橋5-1-20

　現在、都立忍岡高等学校・柳北公園・柳北小学校のある一帯に、江戸時代、肥前国（現、佐賀県、長崎県の一部）平戸藩主松浦氏の屋敷があった。寛永9年（1632）、松浦氏は、幕府からこの地を与えられ、別邸を造営し、庭園を築造した。庭園はのち蓬莱園と命名された。
　明治40年（1907）刊行の『東京案内』には「文化文政の頃の築造に係り、東都名園中現存するものの一也」と記されている。園内の模様は大正3年（1914）刊行の『浅草区誌』に詳しい。同書によると、大池を中心に、岡を築き、樹木を植え、東屋を建て、13基余の燈籠を配し、園内各所に雅趣ある名称を付した。面積は約2千6百坪に及び、池水は鳥越川から取り入れていた。
　この名園も、関東大震災のため荒廃し、消滅した。現在は忍岡高等学校グラウンド東北隅に、池の一部と、都天然記念物指定の大イチョウを残すだけである。

                     REMAINS OF HORAIEN
 Here stood the residence of the Matsura family and a huge garden called Horaien.The Matsuras were feudal lords of the Hirodo Clan(part of Saga and Nagasaki prefectures).Horaien was a beautiful Japanese garden,the area of which was about 8580㎡. It had a big pond in the centre and the pond was surrounded with hillocks,an arbour,and about thirteen stone lanterns.This beautiful garden was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.A part of the pond and a tall gingko tree (a cosmopolitan natural monument)still exist in the northeastern corner of the playground of the Shinobugaoka High School.
