幸田露伴居宅跡

所在地　台東区谷中7-18-25

　幸田露伴は、明治24年（1891）1月からほぼ2年間、この地（当時の下谷区谷中天王寺町21番地）に住んでいた。
　ここから墓地に沿った銀杏横町を歩き、左に曲がると天王寺五重塔があった。五重塔は寛永21年（1644）に感応寺（天王寺の前身）の五重塔として創建され、明治9年（1772）2月に焼失、寛政3年（1791）棟梁八田清兵衛らにより再建された。
　露伴は当地の居宅より日々五重塔をながめ、明治24年（1891）11月には清兵衛をモデルとした名作『五十塔』を発表した。
　明治26年（1893）1月、京橋区円山町（現、中央区）へ転居したが、現在もかたわらに植わるサンゴジュ（珊瑚樹）は、露伴が居住していた頃からあったという。
　露伴は、慶応3年（1867）7月、下谷三枚橋横町（現、上野4丁目）に生まれ、すぐれた文学作品や研究成果を多数発表するなど、日本文学史上に大きな足跡をのこした。昭和22年（1949）7月没、墓所は大田区池上本門寺にある。

　　　　The Remains of Koda Rohan's Home
 Koda Rohan(1867-1947)is one of the famous literary writers of modern Japan.From January of 1891,he lived on this site for nearly two years.The Sangoju or "Coral Tree"(Caprifoliaceae-Viburnum awabuki)growing on this spot is said to have been here since the time of Koda's home.
 From this point,approximately 250 meters to the southeast was the Gojunoto(Five-Storied Pagoda)of Ten-no-ji Temple.The Gojunoto was built in 1644 before being destroyed by fire in 1772 and subsequently rebuilt in 1791 by the master carpenter Hatta Seibei.From his home,Rohan spent his days gazing toward Gojunoto and,in November of 1891,he published his masterpeice Gojunoto(Five Storied Pagoda)whose main character is based upon Hatta Seibei.A storong willed hero spare with words;the"ponderous Jubei"is anaarchetypal image of Japan's craftsman.
