駿馬塚

駿馬塚
　駿馬塚は、平安時代の康平年間（1058～1064）源義家が陸奥へ向かう際、この地で愛馬「青海原」が絶命し、これを葬った所と伝えている。
　現存する塚は、明治28年（1895）造立の石碑や石造層塔の一部を遺すのみだが、天保7年（1836）刊行の『江戸名所図会』には左の挿絵を載せており、江戸時代後期には土饅頭型の塚や「駿馬塚」と書した石碑が建っていたようである。
　現在、付近の人々はこの塚を「馬頭観音」と呼び、覆屋等を設けて大切に守っている。

 　　　　MOUND OF THE FLEET STEED
 This mound is said to be the grave of the beloved horse of the 11th Century samurai Minamoto no Yoshiie who passed here on his way to an expedition to the Tohoku region.
 In an illustration from an early 19th Century book,the mound is introduced in this light,and at also provides us with glimpses of the lifestyle of that period.
 Presently the mound is carefully preserved through the eddorts of the people in the neighborhood.
