　彰仁親王は伏見宮邦家親王の第8王子。安政5年（1858）京都仁和寺に入って純仁法親王と称し、慶応3年（1867）勅命により22歳で還俗、東伏見宮嘉彰親王と改称した。慶応4年（1868）1月に鳥羽・伏見の戦に、征東大将軍として参戦。ついで会津征討越後口総督となり、戊辰戦争に従軍した。
　明治10年（1877）5月、西南戦争の負傷者救護団体として、博愛社が創立されると、9月その総長に就任した。明治15年（1882）には、小松宮彰仁親王と改称。明治20年（1887）、博愛社が日本赤十字社と改名すると、総裁として赤十字活動の発展に貢献した。明治36年（1903）1月18日、58歳で没。
　銅像は明治45年（1912）2月に建てられ、同明治45年（1912）3月18日、除幕式が挙行された。作者は文展審査員の大熊氏廣。『下谷區史』は当地に建てた理由について、寛永寺最後の門跡・輪王寺宮公現法親王（のちの北白川宮能久親王）の兄宮であったことに因んだのだろうと推察している。

       BRONZE STATUE OF PRINCE KOMATSU NO MIYA AKIHITO
 Akihito was the eighth prince of Fushimi no miya Kunie.He joined the Toda/Fushimi war in January,1868 as the commander-in-chief and also took part in the Boshin war.
 In 1877 he establidhed an arganization called "Hakuai-sha"to help the wounded of the Seinan war and headed the association.When it was renamed "Japan Red Cross Society",he assumed  office as its president and contributed to the development of the society.He passed away at the age of 58 on the eighteenth January,1903.
 This bronze statue was erected in February of 1912.The sculptor was Okuma Ujihiro,a Bunten art exhibition judge.The reason why the statue was ercted here is presumed to be that Rinnoji no miya,Akihito's elder brother was the last Monseki of Kanei-ji temple.
