森鴎外旧居跡
　森鴎外は文久2年（1862）正月19日、石見国津和野藩典医森静男の長男として生まれた。本名を林太郎という。
　明治22年（1889）3月9日、海軍中将赤松則良の長女登志子と結婚し、その夏に根岸からこの地（下谷区上野花園町11番地）に移り住んだ。この家は、現在でもホテルの中庭に残されている。
　同明治22年（1889）8月に『国民之友』夏季附録として、『於母影』を発表。10月25日に文学評論『しがらみ草子』を創刊し、翌明治23年（1890）には処女作『舞姫』を『国民之友』に発表するなど、当地で初期の文学活動を行った。一方、陸軍二等軍医正に就任し、陸軍軍医学校教官としても活躍した。
　しかし、家庭的には恵まれず、長男於莵が生まれた明治23年（1890）9月に登志子と離婚し、翌10月、本郷区駒込千駄木町57番地に転居していった。

           Remains of the former residence of Mori ogai
 Mori Ogai (1862-1922)is one of the most famous modrn writers in Japan.In March of 1889 he married Akamatsu Toshiko,and from the summer of that same year lived at this site.This house still stads in the inner garden of a hotel.In October of 1889 he published the literary review"Shigarami zoshi".In January of the follwing year he wrote his first novel Maihime(Dancing Girl).With the completion of these and other early works,this spot should be remambered as the site where he began his literary career.However his domestic life was not so fortunate and in September of 1890 he divorced Tsohiko and moved to a new place the follwing month.

　森鴎外（1862～1922）

島根県津和野出身。旧幕時代の範囲の長男に生まれる。東京大学医学部卒。陸軍省の軍医となり、日清戦争、日露戦争に従軍。
翻訳、創作、批評に活躍、明治文化人の重鎮。代表作に「於母影」（翻訳詩集）。「舞姫」・「雁」・「渋江抽斎」・「高瀬舟」・「うたかたの記」。

森鴎外は、明治23年（1890）この地において文壇処女作の「舞姫」発表しました。そして次々と文学作品を発表し、近代文学史上画期的な活躍をする基礎を築いた地でもあります。
